• Description:
The rollercoaster intro of Ster-Kinekor was introduced around 1993 where the intro starts with the letters going into the tunnel, flying around the logo and the Home Video sign appears in the end (only seen on VHS) and a description at the bottom says “Straight from the big screen!” or “Always better on the big screen!”. The intro was mostly seen on VHS and even at Ster-Kinekor Theatres across the country of South Africa.
• History:
In 1984, Ster-Kinekor introduced their home video company as Ster-Kinekor Home Video in 1993 and later as Ster-Kinekor Home Entertainment in 2000 and Ster-Kinekor Entertainment in mid-2008.
They have released movies, TV films, kids shows, and others from big movie studios include Columbia Pictures, Universal Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, Walt Disney Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Miramax Films, Turner Pictures Worldwide Distribution, and many more. They were released mostly on VHS from 1984 to 2006 and later on DVD in the early-2000s.
Ster-Kinekor didn’t just had their home video company, they also had their own interactive video game company called “Ster-Kinekor Interactive” where they released video games for PlayStation 1, 2 and 3 games, but as of 2001, most of the titles they are released from PlayStation 2 have been under the Ster-Kinekor Home Entertainment label. Sometime in 2005, the company was renamed to Ster-Kinekor Games.
In October 2006, the last VHS tape to be released by the distributor under the “Ster-Kinekor Home Video” label was Over the Hedge, which was distributed by Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation.
In 2008, the company was bought by Primedia and sold off the rights of Sony Pictures and Universal Pictures to Nu Metro Home Entertainment and Next Entertainment.
Sometime in 2014, Ster-Kinekor returned the rights to Sony Pictures, but Next Entertainment still had the rights in spite of this until 2016. As of mid-2018, The division was closed permanently and was being replaced by Filmfinity as the company’s future distributor.
• Reasons why they should bring back the old Ster-Kinekor logo and intro from the 80s and 90s!
Now in 2024, Ster-Kinekor introduced Throwback Cinema where some of the best Classic movies have been returned to the big screen, but unfortunately, I am sticking to VHS tapes and DVDs rather than just going to the movies to watch classic movies for R50.
• Others:
I also made a midi file based on the famous Ster-Kinekor Rollercoaster fanfare from 1993. Here is two links to the midi file and how to make the fanfare in FL Studio:

• Conclusion:
I will always remember this as one of the greatest intros in the history of South African Cinema and Ster-Kinekor from today and onward in the future. Enjoy!
