One reportedly dead, two injured during ‘incident’ at Finke Desert Race
Emergency crews are responding to an incident at the Finke Desert Race in Central Australia, with at least two people injured and taken to Alice Springs hospital.

Northern Territory Police have been unable to provide further details and said there was "limited communication in the area".

"At this stage, we are unable to clarify details," a spokesperson said.

NT Health said a man and a woman, both in their 50s, were being treated at the Alice Springs Hospital following the incident.

The spokesperson said the two people were in a stable condition.

Police are yet to provide further details about whether anyone else was involved.

Organisers of the event said earlier today that they were working with emergency services to manage the situation.

"The event is aware of an incident approximately 35km down the track. Emergency services are on-site attending to the scene," they said in a Facebook post.

"Motorsport Australia and event organisers are working with emergency services to put in appropriate controls to manage the scene.

"We are working with relevant authorities to follow all procedures and NT Police will provide an update in due course."

Race organisers announced that the return leg of the bike category had now been cancelled.

"Event organisers and emergency services are working with competitors and crews to return to Alice Springs safely," they said.

The Finke Desert Race is held annually on the Queen's Birthday June long weekend.

The event is an off-road, multi-terrain, two-day race for bikes, cars, buggies and quads through desert from Alice Springs to the small community of Aputula, also known as Finke.

Toby Price was declared King of the Desert in the car category earlier this morning, after winning the buggy race.

Price has previously won the bike category six times, but this morning became the first rider to claim victory in the buggy category as well.
