Tens of thousands of jubilant Romanians swarmed onto the streets of the capital and other cities after their team beat England three-two on Tuesday, taking it to the quarter finals of the Euro 2000.
In Bucharest, hundreds of cars drove through the city honking their horns into the wee hours of Wednesday.
Youths stripped off their shirts, waving flags and t-shirts, and children sat on their parents' shoulders, in a noisy outpouring of joy that was echoed in the cities of Cluj, Brasov and elsewhere.
People let off firecrackers and hung out of car windows.
Others clambered onto trucks and hugged passers-by in front of the Opera.
Romania had not expected to defeat England and for Germany not to win against Portugal - the only combination which secured them second place in Group A and a berth in the quarterfinals.
Romania will meet Italy on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Euro 2000 at Brussels' King Baudouin stadium.
