The environmental protection agency passed a ban on the use of chrysotile asbestos, the most common form of asbestos.
Chrysotile asbestos is the only known and used form of asbestos remaining in the United States. This is used by the chlor-alkali industry to make sodium hydroxide and chlorine (used in pools, tap water, and for pvc pipes).
Asbestos can still be found in old:
- ceilings
- roofing
- flooring
- appliances (ovens, toasters, cookers, coffee pots, popcorn poppers, dishwashers)
- automotive parts
- insulation
Asbestos poses a severe and permanent risk to lung health and is linked to:
- copd
- lung cancer
- mesothelioma
