Holy water stoups are not found on Presbyterian churches as the use of holy water was banned at the Scottish Reformation. This one has survived because the church was abandoned in 1690. St Mungo's Holy Well behind the church was also abandoned. Robert Burns's father, mother, youngest sister, Isabella and two of his nieces Agnes and Isabella are buried here having lived at Bridge House on the Belleisle Estate.
