Lebanese officials say they have arrested a wife and child of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, an important leader of militant group the Islamic State.
Officials said one of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s wives attempted to cross into Lebanon from Syria with a child on November 23. There have been conflicting reports on the gender of the child. The pair was arrested when it was discovered the woman was using a counterfeit passport.
The woman has been identified as Saja al-Dulaimi, one of 150 women freed from a Syrian government prison in March as part of the prisoner swap that secured the release of 13 nuns held by al Qaeda-linked militants.
Dulaimi is now being questioned by Lebanese authorities, but it is not clear how much information she can offer. The girl also underwent DNA tests to determine whether she is a daughter of al-Baghdadi.
The pair may be used as bargaining chips to negotiate the release of 27 members of the Lebanese security forces being held in captivity by Islamic militants.
The United States said it was not involved in the operation. Quoting an unnamed source with contacts with Iraqi intelligence, Reuters reported that Iraq and Lebanon had collaborated, as the wife is an Iraqi national.
