STORYLINE:
A fierce gun battle broke out Thursday in the tense West Bank city of Hebron, when Palestinians opened fire on Israeli troops after the funeral of a captain in the Palestinian security forces who was killed by Israeli fire a day earlier.
Taking cover behind buildings, several dozen gunmen and Palestinian police officers fired at Israeli tanks.
One armed Palestinian crouched on the ground as bullets hit the street nearby.
Witnesses said an Israeli tank drove into a Palestinian area of the divided city.
The Israeli army said the tank fired a shell, but denied it entered a Palestinian area.
A 50-year-old Palestinian doctor was killed as he tried to run to his car.
Palestinian doctors said seventeen people were wounded in the fighting, including four who were in serious condition.
The divided city of Hebron has long been considered one of the main flash points in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
The majority Arab town is home to 30-thousand Palestinians and 500 settlers and is a major bone of contention between the two sides.
