Shakeh Vartenissian was born in 1924 in Syria of Armenian descent. She was educated in Lebanon. in 1946 she came to the US with a grant and studied at the Peabody conservatory in Baltimore. A Ponselle protegee she made her debut as the countess in Baltimore. In 1951 she sang at the Spoleto festival (Lady Macbeth) and subsequently she sang minor roles at the Met. In Chicago she sang Maddalena opposite the Chenier of Jon Vickers. She then sang all over Europe and sang Donna Elvira in Wexford and Aix-en-Provence. She also replaced Antonietta Stella in a recording of the Verdi Requiem. Vartenissian died in 2003.
