Members from the South Atlantic Salt Marsh Initiative (SASMI) share why the salt marsh matters to them. Through collaborative, proactive, and diverse partnerships, the South Atlantic Salt Marsh Initiative has a goal of conserving and protecting the region’s salt marshes and their migration corridors into the future so they continue to benefit our coastal communities, wildlife, military, and economy, even in the face of rising sea levels. The initiative’s boundary extends from NC down to NE Florida which covers over 1 million acres of salt marsh—approximately the size of the Grand Canyon National Park. The initiative includes over 300 members representing state and federal agencies, local governments, cultural groups, conservation organizations, fishing groups, academics, and other stakeholders.
