Join ULIP for a guest-lecture from Professor Valsamis Mitsilegas (Queen Mary University of London): "Brexit and Security: Challenges for EU-UK Counter-Terrorism and Criminal Justice Co-operation"

The shift in the UK’s status from EU Member State to third country raises the question of how to develop and sustain – after the end of the transition period – a new EU–UK partnership on security and criminal justice. Regardless of the legal framework that will regulate future EU–UK relations, the negotiation and conclusion of any international agreement between the UK and the EU will be subject to the rules on the EU’s external action in the field of criminal justice and police cooperation. This lecture will discuss the challenges that lie ahead of such an agreement.

A panel composed of Professor Engin Isin (QMUL/ULIP) and Victoria Tecca (UCL) will respond to Professor Mitsilegas’s talk.

Valsamis Mitsilegas is Professor of European Criminal Law and Global Security and Deputy Dean for Global Engagement (Europe) at Queen Mary University of London. His latest books are The Criminalisation of Migration in Europe (Springer, 2015) and EU Criminal Law After Lisbon (Hart, 2016). He is a regular adviser to think-tanks, parliaments, governments and EU institutions including the European Commission, the European Parliament and the EU Fundamental Rights Agency and is currently serving for a second term as a member of the European Commission’s Expert Group on Criminal Policy.

Engin Isin took up a chair in International Politics at Queen Mary University of London’s School of Politics and International Relations with the project to build a joint QMUL-ULIP Department of International Politics in Paris.

Victoria Tecca is a PhD candidate at UCL's Anthropology department, currently engaged in fieldwork exploring questions of home-making, belonging, and temporality among Kurdish refugees in and around Grande-Synthe's makeshift 'jungle' settlement.
