How to install recessed lighting in insulated ceiling? We will show you how to insulate around downlights with downlight fire hoods and how to insulate can lights.
In an additional video we will also show you how to install downlights.
Thermahood Downlight Covers and fire hoods for downlights will help you! Are you planning on adding insulation in your loft? Or asking yourself, how to insulate an attic?
Are you feeling a cold draught or air coming from your downlights? Do you want to stop energy loss through your recessed lights?
Do you lose energy because of insufficient insulation over your downlights?

Downlight covers, also called loft caps, fire hoods, downlighter hoods, draft stop covers, can light covers or thermal seal caps, are a great weapon against such heat loss through downlights in attic ceilings and also help to prevent ceiling and attic fires.
PROBLEM 1: DRAUGHTS CAUSED BY DOWNLIGHTS
Halogen downlight lamps can run very hot, up to 300 degrees Celsius. For this reason the roofspace over the downlights cannot be covered with insulation as the hot upper part of the downlighters could easily overheat and ignite the adjacent combustible insulation material. This can even result in a ceiling “inferno”.
Therefore halogen downlights require large insulation clearance around the light fixture in the loft, which as a consequence unfortunately dramatically reduces the insulation effectiveness.
WHY?
Like in a chimney, heated air from the living space escapes through gaps in the light fittings – the lights are never fuylly air-teight - to the attic and then to the atmosphere. Due to so called heat-exchange, the living space will even cool further as the warm air which is drawn to the loft space is replaced by cool air which is pulled through vents and gaps from the outside.
Up to 25% (!) of household energy is lost through air leakage, and downlights are very often the source of a high proportion of this heat and energy loss.
And the gaps in the ceiling insulation further reduces the overall performance. Generally loft insulation performance is reduced by a heavy 50% if only 5% of the ceiling area is not fully insulated!
Air leaks are also called draughts. You are aware of them around windows for example. But the most important leaks are related to your attic! These are the leaks which make your house uncomfortable – just feel the drafts around your downlights!
PROBLEM 2: CONDENSATION
Due to the temperature difference between the top of the downlight and the room, the metal parts of the fittings can easily get wet which, worst case, can lead to dripping downlights!
PROBLEM 3: DETERIORATED AIR QUALITY from polluted loft air
As mentioned, downlights are not air-tight and do not create an airtight seal with the roof. Halogen downlights push dust, pollen, spiders and other insects and insulation particles right into your living area.
SOLUTION: DOWNLIGHT COVERS, downlight insulation guards, recessed light covers, downlight covers for insulation.
With downlight covers or downlight attic seals you can save a lot of energy by restoring ceiling performance to a similar level as a ceiling without any downlights!
Downlight covers provide an air teight seal which dramatically reduce the air leakage through each downlight and therefoe also reduce draughts within your home.
Another great benefit of having recessed light covers is that they allow for an uninterrupted, continuous loft insulation – without any risk of overheating and resulting ceiling fire! Downlight covers isolate the combusitble attic isolation material from the LED downlights.
This drastically improves the effetiveness of your loft insulation and also meets building regulations and even more important insurance requirements!
For sure, the risk of condensation is eliminated at the same time as downlight covers ensure an effective moisture barrier and overcome vapour transmission to loft voids.
FEATURES AND BENEFITS OF DOWNLIGHT COVERS
Summary of the key features an benefits of the downlight covers:
The product:
Allows you to insulate the area around and over the Downlight Attic Seal giving you extra savings on your energy bill
Made from flame retardant material, the Down-light Attic Seal provides a safe seal that also contains the ambient heat from the light
Allows you to seal around the downlight and reduce draughts
Allows you to fit more insulation which means reduced heat loss
