Solanum aethiopicum, also known as Ethiopian eggplant or mock tomato, is little known or appreciated outside Africa. In the Potenza region of Italy, however, this small, bitter fruit is a beloved variety known as Melanzana Rossa di Rotonda, and usually made into relishes or pate. How did it make its way from East Africa to southern Italy?
