STORYLINE
Protesters held a peaceful demonstration in the German town of Rostock on Tuesday a day ahead of the start of the G-8 summit.
Security on Tuesday was stepped up in and around Heiligendamm, the Baltic Sea resort where the summit is to take place.
Police scuffled with the demonstrators in Rostock for the third day in a row on Monday during separate protests in the morning and during an afternoon demonstration in downtown Rostock thousands were seen scuffling with authorities.
Several protests have been held ahead of the three day summit of leaders of the world's major industrial powers.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel will lead discussions with leaders of Britain, France, Japan, Italy, Russia, Canada and the United States on global warming, aid to Africa and the world economy.
German police tightened checks around the G8 summit site of Heiligendamm, and Merkel said the pictures of rock-throwing protesters on Saturday - which she called dreadful - showed the need for tight security.
Police said more than 400 officers were injured on Saturday, 30 of whom were taken to hospital with broken bones and lacerations. Organisers said 520 demonstrators were hurt, 20 of them seriously.
German authorities on Sunday shut down most routes leading toward the Heiligendamm, which had already been sealed off with a 12-kilometre (seven-mile) fence.
As part of the precautions for the summit, police also closed the surrounding waters and airspace.
The G-8 summit, like past ones, was expected to attract protesters opposed to capitalism, globalisation, the war in Iraq and the G-8 itself, though protest organisers called repeatedly for a peaceful action.
