If you don’t take asbestos seriously, you could harm your professional reputation. So don’t risk it.
This video provides an introduction to the dangers of ignoring asbestos. Not dealing with asbestos properly can result in WorkSafeBC stop-work orders and/or fines, which will harm your business through lost hours, missed deadlines, and cancelled projects. And if word gets out that you’re a contractor who cuts corners and doesn’t take asbestos seriously, it could harm your professional reputation.
Found in more than 3,000 building materials, asbestos can be hiding in plain sight. Breathing in asbestos fibres can cause serious health problems including lung diseases and cancer. It’s the leading cause of death for workers in the construction industry in B.C.
Contractors are responsible for their workers’ health and safety, which includes protecting workers from asbestos exposure. The most effective way to manage the risk of exposure to asbestos is to eliminate the source of exposure.
Contractors working with asbestos need to:
- Be licensed to operate in B.C. (as of January 1, 2024)
- Know the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation requirements for asbestos handling
- Identify asbestos properly
- Remove it safely
- Follow safe work procedures and practices
Do your job, do it right, and protect everyone from the dangers of asbestos.
