In Uganda only, 7 per cent of older persons receive a form of pension, while 93 per cent have no pension and no form of income in their old age.
Traditionally in Uganda (as elsewhere in Africa), people in their old age are cared for by their children, grandchildren, families and communities. Due to changing circumstances like widespread poverty and vulnerability in the communities, rapid modernisation affecting the younger generation, these traditional social protection mechanisms are under strain.
