When planting a rosebush in a pot, it's important to choose a pot with a drainage hole and use well-draining soil to prevent root rot. The pot should be large enough to bury the root stock and the bud union of the rosebush.
Start by covering the bottom quarter of the pot with potting soil, placing the rosebush's root graft, and burying it so that the bud union is completely buried 2 to 3 inches deep. Add potting soil near the top of the pot, burying the bud union, and add half a cup of phosphorus-heavy organic fertilizer. Finally, add enough soil to the top of the pot and water thoroughly.
