The National Conference and Congress alliance gained a comfortable lead in the Union Territory, crossing the majority mark as counting was underway for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections 2024. While the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference is leading on 42 seats, its ally, the Congress party is leading on six seats.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) meanwhile, is ahead on 29 seats, with majority of its gains coming from the Jammu region.
This election will establish the first elected government in the UT since 2019 when Article 370 was abrogated.
The main contenders in this highly anticipated election are the Congress-National Conference alliance, the PDP, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Voting was conducted in three phases, with 24 seats in the first phase, 26 in the second, and 40 in the third. The overall voter turnout stood at 63.45 percent, slightly lower than the 65.52 percent recorded in the 2014 assembly elections.
