The government could move to place a limit on indoor gatherings of 100 people or more, under tough new restrictions intended to slow the spread of COVID-19, Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says.
A ban on mass gatherings of 500 people or more has been in place since Monday, but as the number of confirmed cases continues to rise within Australia the government is preparing to implement further restrictions.
Mr Clennell revealed at a federal level, that limit could be set at 100 people.
“(I’m) told very likely it will be a limit on indoor gatherings, probably around 100, but potentially tougher in different states,” he said.
“So, you would have a federal 100 figure, then states like New South Wales could have a 50 figure.”
The figures could differ from states to states, depending on the severity of the virus outbreak.
Mr Clennell also said it was clear we were taking pointers from the US and other countries on their social distancing measures.
“I don’t think there is any doubt either that we are following the US and other countries in our methodology here, bearing mind we are still weeks behind the other countries but unfortunately it's heading in the same direction,” he said.
