Grandparents helping with child care
Child care is very expensive today, especially for single parents who do not have the resources or means to pay for it. It is also very crucial for working parents who do not have any other options but to turn to child care providers to assist them when they are at work. In some instances, grandparents are limited to what they can assist with due to their age, resources and their physical and mental conditions.
Recently, there was a joint study conducted by the University of Chicago, Clemson University, the University of Kansas and John Hopkins University. The study revealed that among a ten year period that about 60% of grandparents provide some kind of child care assistance for their grandchild, and about 70% provide child care for at least two years. This might result from grandparents living close by or within the same household, which makes it very easy and convenient for them to assist their children whenever possible.
The study reveals that about 60% of grandparents live within a 50- mile radius. The grandparents who live within the same household as their grandchildren might take on the role of being the primary child care provider, especially for working mothers with children not in school and who are under the age of five years. The study also revealed that child care differs among ethnicities. For instance, grandparents who barely have any income, education, and who are from minority groups are more likely to care for their grandchildren. Furthermore, if grandparents are unable to babysit they will try to assist their grandchild financially so a child care provider can be obtained to take care of them.
