Who is Mikie Sherrill? Meet N.J.'s newest Democratic Congresswoman

Mikie Sherrill is going to Congress after winning for the Democrats a seat held by Republicans for more than 30 years.

Sherrill defeated state Assemblyman Jay Webber, the Republican candidate, in the 11th District.

Sherrill, 46, is a former Navy helicopter pilot and ex-federal prosecutor elected to the House in her first campaign for any office.

She will succeed Republican Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen, who announced in January amid Sherrill's surging candidacy that he would not seek a 13th term.

Sherrill's campaign drew national attention — former Vice President Joe Biden headlined a rally for her in September — and she shattered the state record for congressional fundraising with more than $7 million through Sept. 30.

Now she's heading to Washington.

Here is a closer look at Sherrill.

Sherrill — her full name is Rebecca Michelle Sherrill — was born in 1972 and grew up in Virginia. Mikie is a nickname, pronounced MIKEY.

After high school she enrolled in the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in 1994.

Sherrill spent almost 10 years on active duty, piloting a Sea King helicopter in Europe and the Middle East, among other responsibilities, according to her campaign website.

She developed a specialty in Russian policy, focusing on nuclear treaty obligations and the Navy's relationship with the Russian Federation Navy.

After leaving the Navy in 2003, Sherrill got her law degree from Georgetown Law School in 2007. She was hired in 2008 by a prominent law firm, Kirkland & Ellis, and was based in its New York City office.

In 2012, Sherrill moved to the U.S. Attorney's Office in New Jersey. She started as an outreach and re-entry coordinator and, in 2015, became an assistant U.S. attorney. She left in 2016.

Sherrill would cite her legal background in objecting to President Donald Trump's firing of then-FBI Director James Comey in May 2017.

"As a former federal prosecutor, I find the timing of his firing suspicious," she said soon after.

Sherrill also called for an independent prosecutor to probe possible ties between Trump's 2016 campaign and Russia.
