STORYLINE:
A magistrate in Kenya has sentenced two Iranian nationals convicted of plotting attacks against Western targets in Kenya to life in prison.
Iranian nationals Ahmad Abolfathi Mohammad and Sayed Mansour Mousavi were arrested in June 2012 and led officials to a 15-kilogram (33-pound) stash of the explosive RDX.
Officials in Kenya say the two suspects may have been planning attacks on Israeli, American, British or Saudi Arabian interests in Kenya.
At their sentencing, their lawyers pleaded for a lenient sentence due to their clients' medical conditions. But when reading his judgement, Magistrate Kiaire Waweru Kiare said that even with their plea, there was a louder cry for justice from victims of extremist attacks.
"Even as I hear the accused persons mitigating and crying for mercy, there is yet a louder cry by the blood of previous victims of terrorist attacks, the orphans, the widows and widowers due to such heinous attacks, all are crying for justice. I therefore sentence each accused to serve life imprisonment in count one," Kiare said.
Outside the court, David Karimi, who is lawyer to one of the accused, said they were going to appeal.
"The magistrate has totally misconceived the law, we are going on appeal," he said.
Iranian agents are suspected in attacks or thwarted attacks around the globe in recent years, including in Azerbaijan, Thailand and India. Most of the plots had connections to Israeli targets.
The two Iranians arrived in Kenya on June 12, 2012 and travelled to coastal city of Mombasa on the same day to receive the explosives, Police Sergeant Erick Opagal's affidavit said.
They travelled back to Nairobi after receiving the explosive from an accomplice who is still at large, it said.
Opagal said the two were arrested on June 19 in Nairobi and led officers to some of the explosives hidden at a Mombasa golf course.
Several resorts on Kenya's coast are Israeli-owned.
