Afro Worldview, formerly known as ANN7, was switched off for good last night. PayTV provider Multichoice, which owns DSTV and Mnet, had said that Afro Worldview's contract would not be renewed when it ended, and it would be replaced by another black-owned news channel. The successful bidder will be announced in a week's time.
The Communication Workers Union is hoping that the 350 or so workers will be hired by the new channel to replace Afro World View on DSTV 405. Mzwanele Manyi acquired the newspaper and the TV channel from the controversial Gupta family last year.
After Multichoice said that the channel's contract would not be renewed he rebranded it to deal with perceptions around the former ANN7. But the end of the road has still been reached. What does it mean for media diversity and freedom in South Africa?
To discuss we're joined by Professor of journalism, author, and former editor, Anton Harber. In studio we're joined by Mahlatse Mahlase who is the chairperson of the South African National Editors Forum
And from the Communication Workers Union we are joined by the General Secretary, Aubrey Tshabalala.
