The United States Army Blues Swamp Romp and members of The United States Army Band Downrange present a tribute to American singer-songwriter and musician, Bill Withers.
American singer-songwriter Bill Withers had several hits over a relatively short career
of 15 years. Two of his songs were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and Withers himself was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. His interest in singing and writing songs dates back to the 9 years that he served in The U.S. Navy. After his stint in the Navy ended in 1965, Withers relocated to Los Angeles in 1967 and released his first debut that same year.

Bill Withers released “Lovely Day” as the lead single on his 1977 album “Menagerie”. The lyrics of this song remind us that, despite the confusion and fear that may surround us each day, we are strengthened by the reassurance of those closest to us and we can face the trials ahead with hope.

Bill Withers; arr. Sgt. 1st Class Chad Leader
In 1965, after serving for nine years in the U.S. Navy, Bill Withers moved to Los Angeles to work as an aircraft assembler while pursuing a career in music. He wrote the iconic “Lean on Me” in 1972 while missing the community of his hometown family and friends in West Virginia. The song would go on to become one of Rolling Stone’s 500 greatest hits of all time. Now more than ever, this song reminds us that our strength lies in our togetherness as we face the coming days side-by-side.
