STORYLINE
A huge diamond unearthed in Botswana commanded an unearthly price of 26.7 (m) million US dollars at Christie's auction house in Geneva on Wednesday.
Christie's said it was a record sale price for the largest D-colour flawless diamond ever offered at auction - a whopping 101.73 carats that took 21 months to polish.
Its formal dollar price, made available by the auction house shortly after the sale, included a final buyer's premium.
As it was the first time the gem had come up for sale, the buyer was entitled to name it.
The new owners named the diamond "The Winston Legacy," after Harry Winston - whose firm was recently acquired by Swatch for one (b) billion US dollars.
The pear-shaped gem accounted for more than a quarter of the 102 (m) million US dollars in sales rung up by Christie's on Wednesday night, a night after Sotheby's had 78 (m) million US dollars in sales.
