Anemia is a decresed level of RBC in the blood which supply oxygen to the tissues of the body. The most common type of anemia is iron deficiency. The other types can be folate deficiency or vitamin B12 deficiency. So anemia needs to be corrected. Almost 15 to 20% of pregnancies can be affected with anemia. One of the most dangerous thing if it is not corrected, but one of the easiest things to prevent id counselled and treated appropriately. So basically anemia has to be prevented in pregnancy. So the most important thing that you do in pregnancy to prevent anemia is diet counselling. Counsel the patient appropriately a good high iron diet. So basically we have to increase the iron in the diet and also see to that the patient doesn’t have folic acid and vitamin B12 defiencies. So the food products which increase these can be green leafy vegetables, lentils, fruits like pomegranate, lean meats and other foods which are more in vitamin C because it increases the absorption of iron. So basically diet has to be appropriately counselled so that there is lot of food products that increase the iron and folate and B12 levels in pregnancy. But when you see that the level of haemoglobin is falling down in spite of these things then we can always supplement them with iron tablets with a combination of folic acid and B12. Sometimes with iron tablets also we may not see. If it is necessary at that point of time to de worm that patient because that may be the cause in fall in haemoglobin. So keep your eyes open for any anemia in pregnancy. Counsel the patient appropriately for a good diet and treat when required.
