Army worms were something I am not used to dealing with in PA. Although the past two years I have had encounters with them that unfortunately left my lawn destroyed.
I think it is important to understand the life cycle and timing of these bugs because it allows you to be mindful of different signs you could be seeing in your lawn. Brown spots do not always mean heat stress, grubs or fungus, they could also mean (not limited to) sod webworms or army worms too.
I was surprised to see these in my lawn so soon this year as well. I reached out to some of my resources and they actually identified some of the moths as sod webworm moths. Although when I started doing my tests, the larvae or caterpillars that were surfacing were clearly army worms (white Y on their head, distinct black dots etc). Acelepryn will kill both sod web worms and army worms. But since my ID on the bugs were Army Worms, I led this video specifically to them. You can follow the same steps for sod web worms as I did with army worms.
Treatment: Best treatment I found was Acelepryn or the active ingredient Chlorantraniliprole. The liquid will work quicker and give you a better coverage than the Scotts Grub Ex, but I understand if budget and tools are an issue. Again, a battery sprayer that will give you a consistent flow and is what you want to use. I will also say that prevention is key. Applying this a couple months ahead of time will ensure you get season long coverage. Acelepryn covers your lawn for 3-4 months.
This was an unfortunate event, but that's lawn care. You just have to be resilient and take some punches once in a while. It is in these moments you have the opportunity to read articles and try to identify and treat the issues. If you feel like you are unsure of what is needed to be done, call a professional and get their opinion or just let them treat your lawn. It is better to reach out for help than to apply products that are not going to fix the issue or that may cause more harm than good.
Lastly, I am not an expert. I rely on articles and my peers in the turf industry to help me make educated decisions. If you find that anything I say is false (backed by literature and not opinions), please let me know and let's have a conversation about it.
