Kelburn Castle, located near Largs in North Ayrshire, Scotland, has a rich history dating back to the 12th century. The castle has been home to the Boyle family, who became the Earls of Glasgow, for over 800 years, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited castles in Scotland.
The original structure was a Norman keep, built around 1143, and it was later expanded and transformed over the centuries. In the 16th century, significant extensions were made to the castle, blending medieval fortifications with later Renaissance influences. By the 18th century, the Boyles commissioned further renovations, giving the castle its current appearance—a mixture of ancient and modern architecture.
Kelburn Castle became particularly famous in modern times for its colorful exterior. In 2007, the Earl of Glasgow invited Brazilian graffiti artists to cover the exterior of the castle with vibrant murals, creating a unique fusion of historic architecture and street art. This project was intended to be temporary but became a distinctive feature of the castle, attracting visitors worldwide.
Today, Kelburn Castle is not only a family home but also a popular tourist attraction. Its grounds host events, art installations, and festivals, while the castle itself is a unique symbol of the blend between old Scottish heritage and contemporary culture.
