Hasan Hasani, voice and sharki (Mitrovica, Kosovo).

This video presents an example of lyric song, performed by a male voice accompanied by a long-necked lute called in the Albanian language sharki. Lyric songs accompanied by long-necked lute are part of an entertainment genre widespread in Kosovo and in many areas of Eastern Europe that have been part of the former Ottoman Empire, and is transversal to different cultures and languages.
The songs are performed during parties, wedding celebrations, musical performances; in the last few decades they had large diffusion thanks also to the market of audio cassettes and, later, CDs.

Hasani, one of the most representative singers today in activity, performs here verses of love that follow each other in chained couplets: the second line of a couplet is repeated at the beginning of the next couplet, which allows expansion of a relatively short text.
The piece was performed during the concert “The legendary epic of Kosovo”, promoted by the Institute of Comparative Music Studies at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini. The event, coordinated by Nicola Scaldaferri, was introduced by a seminar with David Elmer, Zymer Neziri and Ettore Cingano, and saw the collaboration of Leav (University of Milan), Milman Parry Collection of Oral Literature, Harvard University, Albanological Institute of Prishtina, Durham University's Department of Music.
