👉 CPU - Central Processing Unit
Central Processing Unit (CPU) is also called the brain of the computer. CPU consists of Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) and Control Unit (CU). Besides, it has a set of registers which are temporary storage areas for holding data and instructions.
👉 ALU - Arithmetic Logic Unit
- ALU consists of two units - Arithmetic unit and Logic unit.
- The arithmetic unit performs arithmetic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
- The logic unit performs logic operations like greater than, less than or equal to condition.
- ALU performs arithmetic and logic operations and uses registers to hold the data.
👉 Control Unit
- The control unit does not do any actual processing of data.
- It organizes and supervises the processing of data and instructions.
- CU coordinates the input and output devices of a computer.
- It also instructs the ALU to perform the arithmetic or logic operations.
👉 Registers in CPU
Registers are high-speed storage areas within the CPU but have less storage capacity. Registers store data and instructions immediately required for the processing. For example, if user want to add two numbers, both numbers are brought into the registers for processing.
👉 Some registers in the CPU are —
- Accumulator (ACC) - It stores the result of arithmetic and logic operations.
- Instruction Register (IR) - It contains the current instruction.
- Program Counter (PC) - It contains the address of the next instruction to be processed.
- Memory Buffer Register (MBR) - It temporarily stores data from memory or the data to be sent to memory.
