"Crops have been failing for the last 2-3 years...and there was a marriage in the family. There was already a debt of about 80,000 Rupees ( US $ 1777 ) from money lenders...then bank loan of 36,000 Rupees ( US $ 800 ) that he could not pay...so he committed suicide."

"The crop had failed...I did not have any money for her treatment...I have no earnings , no job ...I try to work as a labourer but cannot earn enough. So I could not take her to the hospital - and she died."

"The Maharashtra government was earlier buying the cotton at the rate of Rupees 2500 (US $ 54.4) per quintal (A unit of mass in the metric system equal to 100 kilogrammes) but the prices have been reduced. On top of that, the cost of raising a cotton crop has also gone up. The private money lenders have increased their rate of interest on loans, making the situation very difficult for the people. Many farmers were facing a crisis ....like those having someone sick in the family, or having a daughter ready for marriage, or unemployed children...just too many problems on their heads. So there have been more suicides in such families."
