May 23, 1984: Houston wins a coin flip over Portland, and will draft first in the upcoming NBA Draft.
Rockets head coach Bill Fitch says they will use the #1 pick to select Akeem Abdul Olajuwon (University of Houston). Blazers owner Larry Weinberg said his team is "very interested" in taking Sam Bowie (University of Kentucky) at #2.
The coin flip was delayed 13 days while the NBA investigated allegations that both Portland and Houston had illegally contacted juniors Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing (Georgetown University).
The Blazers were fined $250,000 for having contacted both players.
