STORYLINE:
As diplomatic wrangling continued on Thursday, different units of the British armed forces deployed in the Gulf staged a combined exercise on Thursday at a camp north of Kuwait city.
The British 1st Fusiliers Battle Group demonstrated their main battle tank, the Challenger 2, and Warrior APCs manoeuvering together.
The tanks have recently been upgraded with improved air filters to cope with desert conditions.
Other modifications include second, finer-mesh filters on vehicles.
The British military has been the subject of a good deal of ridicule in the country's press after many of its tanks, helicopters, artillery and other equipment broke down during a major desert exercise in Oman in October 2001.
British forces say they have learned lessons from the training exercise in the Oman desert and Britain's Ministry of Defence has insisted that recent upgrades mean they are now well equipped to fight a desert war.
But Thursday's edition of a UK newspaper, the London Evening Standard, shows a front page picture of a soldier whose boots have melted after just two weeks in the desert heat.
