A wolverine attacking one of our Citizen Wildlife Monitoring Program trail cameras in the Chiwaukum Mountains west of Leavenworth!
Though this wolverine saw or heard our camera and clearly didn't want to have it's picture taken, wolverines in the Cascades are rare, secretive and do not pose a risk to humans unless cornered or trapped.
They are however one of natures toughest animals, capable of traversing extreme mountain ranges and steep snowfields. Wolverines are fierce hunters and scavengers, covering great distances in their search for carrion, including winter killed deer, elk and mountain goats. Their wide-ranging travel also makes it difficult for biologists to study them.
