Found a nice February day to take a break from the build and decided burning pastures and burning trees to clear the land around the build site was needed on our Off-Grid Farm. The weather is still not good enough for us to pour the footings. During filming, we were in a flood watch while it is still getting at or below freezing at night. But the weather looks good in a week to finally get the footings done!
Burning fields goes way back as a method to keep pastures from getting overwhelmed with saplings and brush. This field is one we plan to hopefully hay in future years for our animals. We could also use it for grazing but can't do that if the pasture is full of invasive plants such as locust trees and wild rose.
If you ever decide to burn a pasture, be sure to cut around the area several times making a fire break. Pick a day with light or no wind so the fire doesn't blow out of hand. Also be sure to contact your local law enforcement office letting the know you'll be burning. This way they an keep track and should someone call about the smoke, they'll know that the fire is under control. Not doing so could cause the fire department to come snuff out your fire. Once they are called, they are required to put out the fire which could set your burn back days or weeks.
After taking care of the pasture, I began working on the large pile of trees that stacked up after clearing the build site. Here I actually wanted some wind to help push the fire through the pile. It wasn't packed together dense enough to keep the fire going, so a little wind helped that along. It took a while to get going, but eventually I got it far enough where I could push it in on itself so it could burn all night. You get a nice sneak peak at our future sunsets!

We are an Off Grid Family building a unique home in rural Kansas. Off Grid Living isn't for everyone but we plan to triumph through the ups and downs. Our electricity comes from our Off Grid Solar System and our Rain Water Harvesting set up provides all we need to as this couple builds a home. Once the build is done we will focus more on being an Off Grid Homestead. So please follow us as this couple builds a house and home off the grid.
