People experience allergy symptoms as a result of an overactive immune system. Their immune systems reacts to allergens that are normally harmless. People can be allergic to many different substances: pollen, mold, dust mites, pets, foods, insect venom, medications and even common household products that contain latex. Environmental allergy symptoms can range from minor skin rashes, runny nose, coughing and sneezing to anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction. Common food allergens include milk, eggs, peanuts, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, soy and sesame. Allergy diagnosis involves getting a skin test, blood test or an oral food challenge. Treatment includes over-the-counter and prescription medications as well as allergen avoidance. Allergen immunotherapy, designed to build tolerance to allergens, are also a treatment option. With the help of an allergist, you can reduce allergy symptoms.
