The reason we choose to cold-press🥶 our oil is because during extraction we are able to limit the amount of heat🌡 applied to our beans ensuring we don’t damage or change the natural composition of the pure oil.
The two other common methods of oil extraction are aqueous and solvent.
1️⃣Aqueous (Traditional) Extraction – Commonly used in Haiti🇭🇹 and Jamaica🇯🇲 to produce “Black Castor Oil”, aqueous (water-flotation) extraction requires heating🔥the seeds, grinding them and then boiling🥵 the material to liberate the oil. Once collected from the surface the oil is again heated to remove excess moisture.
✅Pros: Traditional method passed down through generations.
❌Cons: The high temperature causes the oil to burn resulting in a darker color while leaving behind exaggerated odor. The pure chemical structure is also compromised.
2️⃣Solvent (Chemical) Extraction - Hexane🧪 is the preferred chemical used in oil extraction. The seeds are ground up and mixed with hexane which extracts the oil from the material. The hexane quickly evaporates⚗️ leaving only the oil behind.
✅Pros: Speeds up the time to extract the oil allowing mass production.
❌Cons: The toxicity and harmfulness of hexane pollutes the air and can cause several human health implications.
