Have you ever thought about growing spicebush? Lindera benzoin is the host plant for spicebush swallowtails which is why I first grew it. To have butterflies, you need to plant for their babies too.
It also blooms early here in spring and is an early nectar source. I’ve seen loads of small insects on the flowers, even ladybugs.
It will be bright yellow in a few days. If you want the drupes (fruit), you need more than one plant, and then you must wait. You can’t tell if they are male or female until they are older. Maybe one day I will have drupes on one of mine.
This is a great native plant I’ve found easy to grow.
