Luang Prabang, located in north central Laos, is a city rich in cultural, architectural, and religious heritage, blending rural and urban developments over centuries, including French colonial influences. It consists of 58 adjacent villages, with 33 forming the UNESCO Town of Luang Prabang World Heritage Site, recognized in 1995 for its well-preserved heritage. The city is known for its numerous Buddhist temples and monasteries, and every morning, hundreds of monks walk through the streets collecting alms. A significant landmark is Mount Phou Si, offering panoramic views of the city and its rivers.

Formerly the capital of a kingdom of the same name, Luang Prabang has a history that dates back to the establishment of the Lan Xang kingdom in 1353. It remained the royal capital until the Pathet Lao takeover in 1975. Today, it serves as the capital of Luang Prabang Province and is a major attraction for tourists, known for natural sites like the Kuang Si Falls, cultural landmarks such as the Royal Palace Museum, and its vibrant night market. The city also offers a variety of local dishes, with Or lam being a favorite among locals.

Luang Prabang is accessible by air, road, waterway, and, since December 2021, by the high-speed Vientiane–Boten railway, making it a key transportation hub in the region. Its climate is tropical wet and dry, with a cooler period in December and January and a wet season from April to October.
