Canadian Fiddlers’ Advent Calendar 2018

Welcome to day 24! Originally this was supposed to be an Advent Calendar from Dec. 1 - 24, but due to the overwhelming response, it will cover the entire month of December.

December 24 - Mark Sullivan - North Vancouver, BC - “Valse Amelia”

Mark Sullivan is one of Canada’s premier fiddlers. I first met him at Pembroke when he was just a little freckle-faced cutie who played the most amazing old time style fiddle. I remember him playing Tommy Sullivan’s, which was written by a relative. Mark is a multiple winner of both the Canadian Grand Masters AND the Canadian Open (Shelburne) and has recorded several albums over the years.

Mark is married to his lovely wife Laila, who is one of the talented Sabir Sisters. They live in North Vancouver with their two daughters and Mark currently works as a school teacher at a private school in West Van. He continues to play and tour with various acts, and is spearheading the committee to host the 2019 Canadian Grand Masters in BC.

Mark is one of my favourite humans, and I love getting the opportunity to spend time with both him and Laila. I just wish it could happen more often!
