Internship Search Advice - Don’t Do This to Recruiters! Here’s what I recommend you do instead…
First - It is your job to evaluate opportunities, decide where you can best add value to a company, and tailor your resume and application. DO NOT email or message a recruiter asking them where you fit best in their organization.
Second - Start building relationships with key people:
👉 Connect with another employee at the company for an informational interview. (They could become a referral source for you, and referrals are gold!)
👉 Identify who the hiring manager is for the role you’re applying for and send them a connection request with a personal message AFTER you apply. (Let them know you applied and are excited about the opportunity - It can boost your name recognition when they are reviewing candidates.)
👉 Reach out to current and former interns on LinkedIn, and ask them who is best to connect with at the company. (They just went through this process, and they’ll likely have some of the best information for you.)
Give the recruiters some breathing room! They are busy trying to fill a bunch of roles, and they are getting pulled in a ton of different directions each day.
Focus your efforts on connecting with other people at the company who are invested in the specific role you are applying to — People who are not as overwhelmed with hundreds of messages from other eager candidates, and have more bandwidth to respond to you.
