Description: The film shows Professor Mike Donovan (September 27, 1847 – March 24, 1918) sparring at the New York Athletic Club, while a group of men watch the action.
Donovan was the boxing coach of Teddy Roosevelt and would have been 58 years old when this film was shot. He published a detailed book on boxing in 1893 titled - The Science of Boxing. The sparring session in this 1905 film contains, some of the techniques from his 1893 book. Some of the techniques presented in the film would have been illegal in boxing contests in 1905. One of which is the spinning back fist presented in the film.
