The Myanmar military appeared on television on Monday to declare it has taken control of the country, and has declared a state of emergency.
In the early hours of Monday morning, Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior figures from the ruling party were arrested by the military.
Myanmar lawmakers were planned to gather on Monday in the capital for the first session of Parliament.
But phone and internet access to the capital city were lost, and the country's governing National League for Democracy could not be reached.
Tensions had been rising recently between the civilian government and the military, stirring fears of a coup.
The ruling party won re-election in November, but the army claims the vote was rigged.
