11 a.m. Aug. 21 update: Tropical Depression 13 strengthened into Tropical Storm Laura Friday morning as we move into peak hurricane season over the next month.
The 10 Tampa Bay weather team is monitoring Laura closely. An 11 a.m. update from the National Hurricane Center has the storm's potential path shifting southwest. This shift takes most of the Tampa Bay area out of the forecast cone.
Laura is expected to reach hurricane strength early next week as it moves by Florida. An update from the National Hurricane Center said Laura was about 230 miles east-southeast of the northern Leeward Islands, packing sustained winds of 45 mph. It's moving west-northwest at 21 mph. That motion is expected to continue for the next few days.
Meteorologists expect Laura to move near or north of the northern Leeward Islands on Friday, near or north of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico on Saturday and end up near Hispaniola by Saturday night.
