1969 MGC Roadster - stage 2 engine by John Chatham
The MGC made its debut in October 1969 and it was intended to be the replacement for the Austin Healey 3000, which was no longer enjoying the export success it had previously.
Altogether a different car from its 4-cylinder MGB sibling, the MGC used the same engine as the Austin 3 Litre saloon, mildly tuned.
Riding on 15” wheels and featuring torsion bar front suspension, the MGC was available in both Roadster and GT forms, which a total production run of 8,999, more or less equally split between both versions.
Effectively, the MGC was more of a grand tourer than an outright sports car, and appealed to a rather different clientele from the more mainstream MGB.
Although at the time, the motoring press were critical of the MGC’s handling, today’s tyre technology and revised tyre pressures have considerably improved the model’s driving characteristics and now, with these cars being far rarer, they are justifiably sought after for the relaxed and effortless long-distance motoring experience they offer.
This example was first registered in May 1967 and is finished in Tartan Red with black cockpit. A full tonneau cover is supplied together with head rests. Only around 13,000 miles have been covered since the John Chatham stage 2 engine was fitted.
History of the car indicates she was rebuilt from the ground up during the early 1990’s, including fitment of a rebuilt engine, gearbox and overdrive unit and numerous bills from specialists on file show that considerable investment has gone into keeping the MG in good fettle over the years.
She is fitted with Minilite - style knock-on wheels and has the desirable option of overdrive.
This Summer a service was carried out by John Chatham Cars and the MG is running extremely well is and ready for new adventures.
