4. SOUNDBITE (English) Jake Offenhartz, Associated Press:
"This morning, Senator Bob Menendez pleaded not guilty in front of a New York judge on wide-ranging corruption charges. Prosecutors say that Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, wielded his political influence to advance Egyptian interests and to help out local businessmen in exchange for cash and payments of gold bars. Menendez was released on a $100,000 bond. He left the courthouse without speaking to reporters, holding his wife's hand, Nadine. Nadine Menendez and two other businessmen also appear in court alongside Menendez to face federal charges as part of the scheme. Menendez has remained defiant so far. He said he's not going to resign despite growing calls to do so, including from people in his own party. On Monday, he said he expected to beat the charges and remain the senior senator of New Jersey. He's due back in court on October 2nd."
