Last Friday we received a desperate call for advice and help with a Bengal kitten who was extremely ill and getting worse by the minute. Since we started our rescue, we have treated 60 cats with FIP. Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a viral disease of cats caused by certain strains of a virus called the feline coronavirus. Though it is not the same as the Covid-19 we all know, it is still a very serious illness for cats.
The symptoms of this Bengal kitty screamed exactly what we didn’t want to hear. He was FIP positive. Bernard’s owner was desperate to save his life but couldn’t afford the treatment, which is when we offered to cover the costs.
We first heard about Bernard when one of our rescue partners, Bengal Rescue, reached out to us asking for help. They knew we were experienced with FIP, and even though FIP can be a long, exhausting, and expensive journey, once we take a cat into our rescue, we never give up on them. Bernard came to us dehydrated, skinny, and severely anemic with liver abnormalities and an extremely low albumin globulin ratio. Weak and unable to stand, Bernard was as pale as a ghost. We knew he needed immediate treatment.
We started him with an aggressive approach of GS meds, gave him warm food via a syringe, and administered a nutritional booster for calories. We assist with Bernard’s bladder expression since he can’t urinate on his own and we massage his belly to help him poop. We firmly believe he came to us at 11th hour. We tucked him into bed and kissed him a million times that first night, whispering in his ear “you can do this.” His ears were cold, waxy, pale, and yellowish.
We were extremely relieved but also surprised when he survived the first night. By day 3, he started to bear some weight on his legs for a split second he tried to take a few steps of his own. As long as Bernard fights, we will fight with him, no matter what.
We need any and all help possible. Bernard’s medication and treatment has been expensive and we desperately need help covering the bills. We ask that you please donate to this baby to help him return to health and can live out his days with his owner.
