Cold starting my 2003 Mercedes-Benz C230 Kompressor Sport Sedan on a very weak battery. The battery was the original factory battery (11 years old at the time). The temperature was about 8ºF (-13ºC) at the time the video was taken (around sunrise). It was sitting for about 12 hours overnight with temperatures well below freezing the entire time. It has the 1.8 liter M271 4-cylinder supercharged engine with 147,XXX miles.
This video and cold start was done during the arctic cold outbreak of during early January of 2015. The battery was obviously very weak, noted by the very slow crank speed of the starter and resting voltage of only 11.7 volts. After the starter engages, notice the computer begins shutting down the interior lights and dash lights to conserve energy during the starting procedure. The "ESP, Visit Workshop!" message is displayed after the engine starts because the voltage dropped below a level where the computer shuts down the ESP during the start procedure.
