Fortuna Waterfall, or Catarata Fortuna in Spanish is one of the best things to do while visiting Costa Rica. The waterfall drops about 70−75 meters and is at the base of the dormant Chato volcano, about 5.5 km outside of the town of La Fortuna, near the Arenal Volcano.
There is a fee to go in, around $10 per person. Don’t forget your bathing suit, you can go swimming in the natural pool below the waterfall if you are interested.
Pro Tip: while the waterfall is usually from 7am - 4pm we highly recommend either making this your first spot or go around mid day. It gets really packed mid-morning and the stairs going down and up get quite busy.
The way down is easy, it’s the way up that will leave you feeling accomplished and ready for lunch. About 500 steps (give or take) is what separates you from the waterfall. Conveniently there is a really nice restaurant onsite. We enjoyed a well deserved lunch after checking out the waterfall.
