Anti-racism protesters have gathered in Newcastle ahead of a far-Right demonstration.
Northumbria Police has implemented a number of extra legal powers.
Officers have enhanced stop-and-search capabilities for people and vehicles in the hunt for weapons.
They will also have the authority to remove items used to conceal identity, such as face coverings.
Council leaders said the public can safely go about their lives amid concerns about the potential for more unrest.
They have urged residents not to share “unfounded” social media rumours that could spread fear.
