The history of the Pushkar Holy Lake Parikrama is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology and religious traditions. Pushkar is considered one of the oldest cities in India and holds immense significance in Hinduism. The Parikrama refers to the circumambulation or circular path around the sacred Pushkar Lake.
According to Hindu mythology, the creation of Pushkar Lake is attributed to Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe. It is believed that Lord Brahma dropped a lotus flower from his hand, which fell at the site where the Pushkar Lake was formed. The lake is considered to be a manifestation of Lord Brahma's divine power.
The Pushkar Holy Lake Parikrama is an integral part of the pilgrimage to Pushkar. Devotees believe that performing the Parikrama around the sacred lake is a means to seek blessings, cleanse sins, and attain spiritual merit. The circumambulation involves walking around the lake, usually covering a distance of approximately 5 kilometers.
The Parikrama path around the Pushkar Lake passes through numerous ghats, temples, and other significant landmarks. These include the Brahma Ghat, where pilgrims take holy dips in the lake, and various temples dedicated to Hindu deities such as Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva.
Each year, during the auspicious period of Kartik Purnima (full moon day in the Hindu month of Kartik, which usually falls in November), the Pushkar Fair is held. This fair attracts a large number of devotees and tourists who come to witness the religious fervor and participate in the Parikrama rituals. The Pushkar Fair is a vibrant cultural event that blends spirituality, trade, and entertainment.
The Pushkar Holy Lake Parikrama has been an integral part of the city's religious and cultural heritage for centuries. It continues to draw devotees, pilgrims, and visitors who seek spiritual solace and a deeper connection with Hindu traditions. The ritualistic circumambulation is a way to pay homage to the divine and experience the sacredness of Pushkar, while also immersing oneself in the rich history and cultural tapestry of the region.
